Shabbat Message from Cantor Loomer

Va'eira
In Parashat Va'eira, Moshe tries to reassure the Jewish People that they will be soon freed from slavery, but they pay little attention to him. I suppose, trying to explain "freedom", something which they have never experienced is a difficult to explain concept. It reminds me of the story of Operation Moses, when trying to evacuate the Ethiopian Jews from the Sudan during a civil war and famine. Imagine being told that you are going to Israel and thinking of all that they have heard before as it was described as the Jerusalem where the streets were paved with gold. This is what one person who came to Eretz Yisrael described to me when I met him at Mevaseret Tzion during a mission trip many years ago. They couldn't understand what they've never experienced.
Here, the Israelites or Hebrews as they were called struggled to digest Moshe's words fully. The Torah says they did not listen intently because of Moshe's "shortness of breath". When Moshe spoke to them about G-d redeeming them now, on some level his delivery was lacking. They heard his words but not quite comprehending.
They were after all very happy to be leaving Egypt and therefore, you would think that nothing else should matter. Perhaps Moshe through his delivery or lack there of wasn't convincing due to his speaking skills.
From this we learn an important lesson about speaking in a manner that people will listen. Fancy language isn't always best and although the content and the person, in this case, Moshe, delivering the message should mean absolutely everything, we learn that someone's speaking skills make all the difference in the world. Had Moshe spent a little more time on those factors, he would have been more effective.
While it is true that the most important quality of a message is the content, it is just as important to organize our thoughts and deliver them in a way that is clean, easy to understand, polished and persuasive and of course used for only good. We learn to invest time and energy into not only our ideas but also an effective delivery so that we have a positive impact with our words. May we all use our words for mitzvot and deeds of loving kindness always.
Shabbat Shalom
