COVID-19 Considerations for the 2020-2021 School Year

For the coming year’s school program, we are preparing for several potential scenarios:

  1. Returning to the classroom activity at the synagogue with all required and appropriate social distancing policies in place;
  2. Continuing with the virtual / online approach successfully utilized from March to May of this past academic year;
  3. A combination of the two – starting with online learning and progressing into on-site classes.

In the past, we have provided a hot meal for the students attending school. In light of the current circumstances, the program fees have been reduced and we will initially not include dinner. Should this become a safe and viable option, we shall offer it at that time with an additional fee.

We will be regularly evaluating circumstances and deciding on the most appropriate approach, updating families on a timely basis.

  3. Grades 5 – 7                         Mondays: 5:00-7:30 PM

As always, our Judaic Studies curriculum will include:

  • Living with the Jewish calendar with practical applications as we make our way through the year;
  • Exploration of themes in Jewish history;
  • Appreciating the connection with Israel through regular activities with our Shinshinim – young Israeli emissaries;
  • Familiarity with the basic elements and structure of Jewish prayer;
  • Maximum class size of twelve students, with class assistant support;
  • All this will be done on an age-appropriate basis per class.

Our Hebrew language study will continue to allow students to develop their Hebrew reading skills based on their personal level, working individually or in pairs with teachers and tutors. For those preparing for their Bar/Bat Mitzvah celebration during the coming academic year, support will be offered for the Hebrew element of their individual portions, should that be requested.

What People are Saying

All three of my children have attended Beth David's Hebrew School over the last few years, from kindergarten through to the B'nai Mitzvah and then Tikun Olam programs.

The quality of the programing is excellent and adapted to each child's level. The school provides interesting and thoughtful learning opportunities that keep the students engaged while learning Hebrew and about Judaism, even at the end of a long school day. I particularly love the introduction of the Tikun Olam program the past couple of years which keeps kids connected to the community once they have become B’nai Mitzvah.

I imagine that this experience will have strengthened the foundation of Judaism in Elia. We know as her parents that the relationship she has developed as a student of this program will feed her sense of Judaic responsibility as a congregant for years to come.

Even though classes were at the end of a long Monday of school, our daughter was never reluctant to go. Not in the worst winter blizzard, nor the last 3 weeks of classes that followed her Bat Mitzvah. She enjoyed connecting with her peers and teachers and was always very relaxed at the end of each session. I think gourmet kosher food dinners probably were a welcomed change as well.
