Please join workshop leader Tema Smith, a diversity advocate, writer and Jewish community builder, to help us, the Beth David community, explore what it means to be an anti-racist synagogue, to reflect on what we may have done historically, and may do today, that inadvertently makes some people feel less welcome in our Jewish Community and specifically at Beth David.

Description: What does it mean to be an anti-racist synagogue? How do we move beyond welcoming by recognizing some of the barriers that have prevented Jews of Colour and other groups from participating fully in the Jewish community? This session will be a space to learn about some of the key themes in this area, and provide time for self-reflection and skills-building in pursuit of a more diverse and equitable congregation.

Tema Smith is a diversity advocate, writer and Jewish community builder. She is the incoming Director of Jewish Outreach & Partnerships for the Anti-Defamation League (ADL). Tema was previously the Director of Professional Development at 18Doors and spent seven years as a synagogue professional, most recently as the Director of Community Engagement at Holy Blossom Temple, Toronto’s oldest synagogue.

Tema speaks and trains frequently on racial equity, diversity and antisemitism for synagogues, Jewish organizations, and community groups across North America. She is a member of the Nexus Task Force examining the issues at the nexus of Israel and Antisemitism in America and of the inaugural cohort of the Shalom Hartman Institute Seminar & Writers Workshop for Journalists.
