Music Was His Mistress: The Sophisticated Sounds of Duke Ellington

Guest speaker: Jonno Lightstone

Legendary jazz musician and bandleader Duke Ellington, famous for such standards as Mood Indigo, Take the A Train and Sophisticated Lady, composed thousands of scores for the stage, screen and contemporary songbook over his 50-year career. Ellington overcame racial, social, and musical obstacles to create his own unique blend of complex yet accessible jazz. Enjoy this lecture, including video clips and musical selections performed clarinet and saxophone by Jonno.

Jonno Lightstone is a multi-instrumentalist, equally at home on saxophone, clarinet and flute. He graduated from the Humber College Jazz program in 1990 and holds a Masters Degree in Ethnomusicology from York University.

Jonno is regarded as one of Toronto's finest klezmer clarinetists and has led many bands that push the boundaries of klezmer music. Among them: Klezmology, The Yiddish Swingtet, Matzoh Ball Gumbo and Hu tsa tsa. Jonno is a longtime collaborator with acclaimed Jazz guitarist Brian Katz, and they often perform as the duo Katz-Lightstone.

An avid music educator, Jonno teaches woodwinds at Royal St. George’s College, leads workshops and ensembles, and teaches privately. He is the musical director of Klezkonnection, the largest klezmer community orchestra in Canada.
