STRATEGIC PROGRAMMING & COMMUNICATIONS PLANNER | Beth David Synagogue

Beth David Congregation is one of the most dynamic egalitarian conservative congregations in Toronto. It contains the rich history of the B’nai Israel congregation, and the Beth Am congregation. We provide a place of worship, study and gathering for all age groups, including seniors and young families. Today Beth David successfully accommodates the flourishing Montessori Jewish Day school on its property and celebrates its 70th anniversary in 2025.
The Opportunity:
The Strategic Planner at Beth David will lead the synagogue’s strategic initiatives to foster a deeper relationship with the community. This individual will oversee the development and execution of educational, social, and cultural programs, while also driving personal outreach and member engagement efforts. The Strategic Planner will work closely with clergy, staff and lay leadership to create a thriving vibrant synagogue community, utilizing data-driven strategies to increase engagement, membership, and participation across all demographics.
Responsibilities
Strategic Community Engagement
  • Develop and implement comprehensive strategy to enhance member engagement and satisfaction.
  • Act as a key liaison between clergy, staff, and congregants, ensuring alignment of programming with the synagogue’s mission and vision.
  • Utilize data and feedback from the congregation to identify opportunities for increased participation, retention, and outreach.
Member Relations & Outreach
  • Implement a proactive outreach strategy to engage potential new members and retain current members, focusing on cultivating deep personal relationships.
  • Collaborate with the membership committee and lay leaders to develop campaigns that promote membership growth and involvement.
  • Develop and mange partnerships with other Jewish organizations, including Montessori Jewish Day School and UJA’s ShinShinim program, to expand the synagogue’s reach.
Data Driven Decision Making
  • Use data analytics to track member engagement, event participation, and program effectiveness, adjusting strategy as needed based on insights.
· Program Innovation & Leadership:
  • Design and oversee a portfolio of innovative, inclusive programs for all age groups, including religious, educational, social, and cultural activities.
  • Lead signatures synagogue events, such as holiday celebrations.
  • Work with clergy to incorporate meaningful religious components into events, enhancing Jewish identity and spiritual growth.
· Communications & Marketing Strategy
  • Work collaboratively with the Program and Communications Manager to guide the Synagogue’s communications strategy, including newsletter, email campaigns, and social media ensuring consistent high-quality messaging that provides current, relevant, and timely information to the members and external audiences and promotes programs and strengthens community engagement.
What you will need to qualify:
  • You will thrive in a diverse, dynamically changing environment, with a keen ability to work effectively with a people from all age groups, including staff, clergy and members alike, creating confidence, positivity and trust.
  • Related experience in program leadership, engagement or a leadership role, preferably within a synagogue, camp, Jewish Institution, or a non-profit organization.
  • Proven success in developing engagement strategies and community-building initiatives.
  • Strong understanding of Jewish traditions, culture and religious customs and practices.
  • Excellent leadership, organizational, and interpersonal and communications skills.
  • Experience in managing teams, budgets, and volunteer programs.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and Jewish holidays as required.
  • Having a futuristic strategic perspective on growth opportunities and potential to create and shape community growth.
  • Proficiency  of computer software such MS Office products (Outlook, Word Excel, PowerPoint).

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR | Beth David Synagogue

The Opportunity:

Reporting/accountable to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will provide a welcoming and engaging environment by collaborating with the clergy team, Board and local communities, provides hands-on support, direction and leadership to the office staff to meet the needs of the synagogue and local community.

Responsibilities

· Organizational leadership: collaborates with the clergy team, supports the Board on its strategic plan and energizes employees to help with the growth efforts of the synagogue,

· Financial Management: oversees the management of the synagogue’s finances in a fiscally responsible manner,

· Building and Property Management: day-to-day responsibility for the maintenance of the property and to ensure all equipment is in good working condition,

· Programming & Membership: assisting various committees on developing, implementing, and supporting high quality programs as required and ensuring effective record keeping practices for memberships and events,

· People Management: ensuring appropriate staff are recruited, developed and empowered and establishing high quality service to members,

· Information Technology: Computer savvy, maximizing existing technologies for efficiency and safeguard confidential records with appropriate security systems,

· Communications: Implements and maintains an effective communications strategy that provides current, relevant, and timely information to the members and external audiences.

· Fundraising & Outreach: organize and participate in fundraising campaigns, helping identify donors, and seeking ways to promote shul activities externally

  • You will thrive in a diverse, dynamically changing environment, by skillfully managing priorities, displaying adept problem-solving capability, with a keen ability to deploy resources effectively,
  • Related experience in a managerial or supervisory capacity,
  • Strong organizational skills to ensure an efficient office operation,
  • Being self-motivated and goal oriented to meet goals in a timely manner,
  • Skilled communicator, both written and oral, to provide clarity and understanding for staff, clergy and members alike, creating confidence, positivity and trust,
  • Understanding of Conservative and Egalitarian values, rituals, customs and practices  that reflects the culture and image of the synagogue,
  • Having a futuristic strategic perspective on growth opportunities and potential to create and shape community growth,
  • Possesses a team-oriented mindset that engages, empowers and inspires others and works seamlessly with the staff, clergy team, the President/Board, the Montessori Jewish Day School, suppliers and assorted committees.
