Sukkot Message from Michael Rubin
"ושמחת בחגך – ושמחת בקהילתך"
Dear Beth David Community,
We are about to begin the celebration of Sukkot, the one Festival that emphasizes the obligation to make it a joyous occasion - ושמחת בחגך - You shall rejoice in your Festival.
That is not always the simplest of instructions to follow, depending on our circumstances. Certainly, over the last few years of COVID restrictions and concerns, the numbers present at Sukkot celebrations at Beth David have been less than cause for celebration, with full awareness and acknowledgement of the challenges and fears so many of us have justifiably had.
However, the wonderful attendance over the past couple of weeks of High Holy Days has easily restored the optimism and joy of celebrating and commemorating in the Beth David community! The smiles and delight expressed through renewed encounters with, and between so many of our congregants over those three days was as elevating and uplifting as the services themselves.
This year during Sukkot, I will be adding (as in the title above!) the blessing of rejoicing in our congregation. We have much for which to be grateful and I hope that the joy of gathering will provide pride and confidence in our values and identity as we determine the next stage of our community life.
Hag Sukkot Samei’akh
Michael, Iris, and Elah
We remember with reverence and love those for whom Yahrzeit will be observed this week.

✡ מזל טוב ✡ Mazal Tov to Cantor Marshall Loomer who received Smicha this past week in Crown Heights, New York.
Parashat Ha'azinu
Torah: Deuteronomy 32:1-32:52 (EH p.1185 ) Haftarah: Hosea 14:2-10; Joel 2:15-27 (EH p. 1234 )
The Shabbat between Rosh Hashanna and Yom Kippur is called Shabbat Shuva. Shabbat Shuva, also known as Shabbat of Return, is a special time during the Ten Days of Repentance. It serves as a reminder for us to reflect on our actions, seek forgiveness from those we may have wronged, and make amends for any mistakes we have made throughout the year. It is a time to focus on personal growth, self improvement, and spiritual introspection.
Shabbat Shuva encourages us to reconnect with our values, mend broken relationships, and strive towards becoming the best version of ourselves. All of this, as a path towards the journey of understanding the true meaning of teshuvah (repentance).
As well, Shabbat Shuva serves as a reminder for us to reflect on our speech and how we communicate with others. It encourages us to refrain from negative talk, and spreading rumours. By this action, we can create a more positive and harmonious environment.
A harmonious environment includes one that opposes racism and discrimination, one that we can all agree is the environment which Beth David strives to always be. Let’s use this opportunity to ensure that everyone feels welcome and included as we contemplate a better future within our own personal space and the space that we share with our community.
G’mar Chatima Tova, May all of us merit to be inscribed in the book of life in good health. Kein Yehi Ratzon.
Marshall Loomer
