Shabbat Message from Rabbi Philip Scheim

Yitro 5784
As we prepare ourselves for this week’s monumental Torah reading of Yitro, culminating in the revelation of Torah at Sinai and the Ten Commandments, memory takes me back forty years, to the week of Yitro 5744/1984, one of the saddest weeks in the life of Beth David Congregation, marked by the passing of Rabbi Albert Pappenheim z”l, at the too-young age of 62.
That painful memory was brought to mind by the recent passing of Rabbi Erwin Schild z”l, Rabbi Pappenheim’s fellow refugee from Germany, fellow Yeshivah study-partner in London, fellow internee in Quebec, fellow student of Rabbi Price’s Yeshivah in Toronto, and finally, neighboring colleague at Adath Israel Congregation. Rabbi Schild died close to his 104th birthday, having been granted the long life that his beloved friend Albert had not achieved. As long as I live, I will not forget the tears that Rabbi Schild shed in his eulogy for Rabbi Pappenheim, nor the guidance he offered me as I coped with assuming the rabbinic leadership of Beth David at the age of 30.
One suggestion that I received from Rabbi Schild during that difficult year remains forever etched in stone. Irma Pappenheim z”l and I were preparing the text for the matzevah, for the monument that would mark her father’s grave at Dawes Road Cemetery. I sought Rabbi Schild’s advice as to an appropriate Biblical verse for the matzevah. We pondered verses pertaining to Avraham, Rabbi Pappenheim’s Biblical namesake, but did not find the right verse. Rabbi Schild then suggested that we shift to Moses, whom the Torah described as “ anav m’od mikol adam al pnei ha-adamah – the most humble person in the world (Numbers 12:3),” a verse which seemed to be a perfect fit, and which made it to the monument. Of all his many qualities, it was Rabbi Pappenheim’s humility that stood out and continues, in memory to inspire us and to remind us of the need to place the needs of others and of community before our own. Forty years later, his teachings and his humility live on. Yehi Zikro Barukh.
