Rosh Hashanah Message from Michael Rubin
Dear Beth David Family,
Although we will not read the entire Parashah of Haa’zinu until Shabbat Shuvah, next week, I find something wonderfully relevant about the nature of the text and its format as we are about to begin the New Year. Ha’azinu is written as a song – “shira” – and structured in two narrow columns in the same place as the usual single column for the Torah text. No less significant, there is a beautiful metre to the verses, as in many traditional poetry formats, and the reading flows smoothly and mantra-like...but for only so long. Every few verses, there is a halting element of trope/chant, forcing us to pause before continuing with the comforting rhythm. It is as if the Torah is suggesting that, while the song encourages us to ease into its flow, we shouldn’t get too comfortable, and neglect the requisite focus on content and the need to explore.
With Rosh HaShanah on our doorstep, or as we stand on the threshold of the New Year, we would do well to find a sustainable balance between remaining in the comfort and familiarity of our High Holy Day traditions, chants, and melodies, and the potential of pausing every so often to consider how we might renew our experience with a new rhythm, a fresh tune - perhaps a temporarily jolting moment - yet one with the promise of a new and no less meaningful and satisfying pace and path.
Wishing you all a New Year of good health, peace, and just the right measure of displacement.
Michael, Iris, and Elah
