Parashat Bamidbar
May 20, 2023 29 Iyar 5783
Shabbat Mevarchim Rosh Hodesh Sivan begins the evening of Saturday May 20th and ends the evening of Sunday May 21st
Parashat Bamidbar is rich with lessons about community and the importance of unity among the Jewish people. It begins with a detailed census of the Israelites, where each tribe is counted, and their specific roles and responsibilities within the community are outlined. This emphasis on organization and structure highlights the significance of community in Jewish life.
One of the key lessons we can derive from this portion is the idea that every individual has a unique role within the community. Each tribe is assigned specific duties related to the tabernacle, such as carrying and guarding its components during travel. This teaches us that each person has their own talents, strengths and contributions that are essential to the overall functioning and success of the community. It emphasizes the importance of recognizing and valuing the diversity of skills and perspectves within a community.
Bamidbar also highlights the challenges that can arise within a community. Throughout the narrative, we witness instances of dissension, complaints, and rebellions. These incidents serve as cautionary tales, reminding us of the destructive nature of divisiveness and the negative impact it can have on a community.
We must look at our own lives and our own talents and strengths and find ways to utilize them for the betterment of our community. On our own Beth David logo, it says Participate, Learn and Grow. If you have found yourself lately feeling as if you haven't participated in a meaningful way lately, approach us and let's find something for you to do. We need everyone to feel as if they are contributing rather than being a spectator. Perhaps, dedicate one morning a week and have breakfast at Beth David for example. I find that the breakfast and shmoozing after the morning minyan is a great way to meet regulars and learn something every day as well as fulfilling a mitzvah.
As well Bamidbar reminds us to be mindful or our words and actions within the community and to strive for unity, empathy and cooperation. We are encouraged to support one another, to resolve conflicts peacefully, and to work together towards common goals.
Ultimately, we learn from Bamidbar that a strong vibrant community is one which individuals recognize their roles within, fostering a spiritual connection for all its members.
Shabbat Shalom,
Marshall Loomer
