✡ מזל טוב Mazal Tov to Kim & Mitch Potashner on the naming of their daughter
Ruby Florence Potashner on Thursday September 22nd ✡
Within the secular world in which we live, it’s hard to feel the presence of G-d. We live in a “Western Society”, where there is a separation between “church and state”, or as we might refer to as “shul and state. Yet, at the same time, it has helped create a society in which G-d remains outside of public discussion and also outside of the important contributions that religion can offer in social and public domains.
Judaism teaches us that all of life should be infused with a religious viewpoint and that there really are no areas of life that are secular. G-d is found everywhere. However, even for observant Jews, there is a struggle to feel the presence of G-d. It takes tremendous efforts to avoid making our religious rituals simply just another task of the day. In some ways, it’s easier for a non-observant Jew because he or she can often choose which mitzvot they wish to perform based on their meaning to this individual. An observant Jew simply must perform these mitzvot whether they find them meaningful or not. Falling into religious boredom or monotony is a trap which we should try to avoid.
Rav Soloveichik explains, the central mitzvah of the Torah. “Just as G-d clothes the naked, we too must clothe the naked, just as G-d visits the sick, we too must visit the sick, just as G-d comforts the mourner, so too must we comfort the mourner.” Similarly, the Talmud (Shabbat 133b) teaches us that as G-d is merciful and kind, so too must we be merciful and kind. Helping others the pathway to G-d.
We have the obligation to walk in the ways of G-d and the Torah. Each one of the mitzvot is a step towards the right direction leading us to feel more closely the presence of G-d. Our focus should be on helping man even if it may seem to come at the expense of personal religious growth. By doing so, we are engaging in our personal character development, therefore coming closer to G-d. This is actually the central mitzvah of the Torah.
