Tisha B’Av starts this Saturday night. It is a day of fasting and mourning various historical calamities, including the destruction of the First and Second Temples in Jerusalem. One of the reasons our rabbis give for the Temples' destruction is sinat chinam, baseless hatred, of not having empathy for others. Israeli poet Yehuda Amichai speaks to this idea in a way I find compelling, in his poem “The Place Where We Are Right.” Perhaps we can draw lessons from Amichai’s words for our own time as well.
The Place Where We Are Right
by Yehuda Amichai
From the place where we are right Flowers will never grow In the spring.
The place where we are right Is hard and trampled Like a yard.
But doubts and loves Dig up the world Like a mole, a plow. And a whisper will be heard in the place Where the ruined House once stood.
Shabbat Shalom,
