Rabbi Scheim to become Rabbi Emeritus

Rabbi Scheim to become Rabbi Emeritus (and other Clergy updates!)

On behalf of the Board of Directors, I’m pleased to share some important updates about our Clergy team.

First, we are excited to announce that, upon his retirement in July, our Senior Rabbi Philip Scheim will become Beth David’s first Rabbi Emeritus. This honour reflects our profound respect and deep gratitude for his 40 years of devoted service to Beth David. Going forward, Rabbi Scheim will provide advice and support to Beth David’s Clergy and lay leadership, be a teaching resource for our community, and be available to assist with rabbinic duties.

In recognition of Rabbi Scheim’s passion for Jewish education, Beth David and the Jewish Theological Seminary (JTS) are proud to announce the Rabbi Philip S. Scheim Jewish Education Fund at Beth David and the Rabbi Philip S. Scheim Scholarship at JTS. More information about these two funds and how to contribute will be communicated next week.

We are also pleased to advise that we have extended Rabbi Becca Walker’s contract for an additional year, in recognition of her efforts to provide rabbinic leadership to Beth David over the past two years. Rabbi Walker will continue her engagement work with our 20s/30s and young families and will expand her pulpit responsibilities to serve the full Beth David community.

And, of course, Cantor Marshall Loomer and our Ritual Director Michael Rubin round out our hard-working Clergy team, bringing, between them, a combined 40+ years of pulpit and pastoral experience. Together, Rabbi Walker, Cantor Loomer and Michael have begun planning an enhanced spiritual experience for the High Holy Days, so please keep an eye out for details over the summer.

Further to my March 12th message about our Senior Rabbi search, Rabbi Fabián Werbin has advised that he has accepted a position at a synagogue in Potomac, Maryland, not far from his current congregation. While we are disappointed that he will not be joining the Beth David community, we wish Rabbi Werbin and his family all the best. Our Senior Rabbi Search Task Force will be meeting soon to discuss next steps, including our participation in the next Rabbinical Assembly recruitment round, later this year.

While we were planning to be in a different place at this stage, Beth David remains very fortunate to have the capabilities and professionalism of Rabbi Walker, Cantor Loomer, and Michael Rubin, and to have Rabbi Scheim as our Rabbi Emeritus. As we continue with our search for a new Senior Rabbi, we will move forward with the leadership of our full Clergy team, along with our professionals and volunteers, to ensure engaging, meaningful services and stimulating programs during the High Holy Days and throughout this transition year.

I hope that you will join us for Kabbalat Shabbat Services on Friday, May 7th at 6:00 pm, when we will say a special thank you to Rabbi Scheim.

As always, if you have any comments or questions, please contact me at
